La Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Los Cabos («LCHS») fue fundada el 17 de septiembre de 1992 y ha estado sirviendo a la comunidad de Los Cabos continuamente durante los últimos treinta años. El terreno en el que se construyó nuestro refugio fue generosamente donado por la familia Ceseña.
Nuestra misión es detener el grave problema de la sobrepoblación animal en nuestras comunidades. En Los Cabos, el municipio de mayor crecimiento en México, hay miles de perros y gatos abandonados, enfermos o sin hogar. No hay agencias gubernamentales ni recursos asignados para el control de animales en Los Cabos.
Desde 2018 hasta 2022, LCHS realizó 15 430 esterilizaciones gratuitas o de bajo costo. Nos enfocamos en llevar este servicio a las colonias más necesitadas y desatendidas. Aquí es donde nuestros programas están marcando la mayor diferencia.
En 2022, LCHS presentó la campaña única y extremadamente exitosa «Veterinario en Tu Colonia» que lleva a los veterinarios a los vecindarios más pobres de Los Cabos cuatro días a la semana. Durante las campañas, los dueños de mascotas que en su mayoría no cuentan con transporte ni ingresos suficientes para llevar a sus mascotas a veterinarios privados, pueden acudir a la clínica temporal de su colonia y examinar a sus mascotas por tan solo 50 pesos. Además del examen, ofrecemos vacunas al costo, desparasitación, análisis de laboratorio y tratamientos contra pulgas y garrapatas. La tarifa que se cobra por las esterilizaciones es mucho más baja que nuestro costo real e incluye anestesia, antibióticos y suturas que se disuelven, por lo que no es necesario que el dueño de la mascota pierda más trabajo para que le quiten los puntos. Los precios de las esterilizaciones en nuestras clínicas son: 150 pesos para perros machos, 50 pesos para gatos machos, 500 pesos para perras y 200 pesos para gatas.
La educación comunitaria es muy importante para trabajar para frenar la sobrepoblación animal. Visitamos escuelas regularmente y recibimos estudiantes en el refugio para enseñarles sobre el trato humano y el cuidado de los animales de compañía, y por qué la esterilización y la castración son tan vitales. También brindamos una oportunidad para que los estudiantes de secundaria completen las horas requeridas de servicio comunitario en el refugio.
En 2022 colocamos a 110 perros y gatos afortunados en hogares permanentes, casi el doble de la cantidad de adopciones en 2021. La mayoría de los gatos y perros fueron adoptados localmente y algunos fueron a EE. UU. y Canadá, donde tenemos asociaciones con sociedades de rescate. Tenemos muchos perros de razas grandes en nuestro refugio, incluidas muchas mezclas de pit bull. Constituyen la mayoría de los perros que corren sueltos y procrean. Por lo general, no se adoptan rápidamente y no es fácil volar fuera de México debido a su tamaño. El refugio es el hogar de muchos gatos adolescentes y adultos que también son más difíciles de ubicar que los gatitos.
Desde 2018, LCHS ha sido un refugio de «no matar» y, a veces, los perros y gatos viven con nosotros durante un año o más hasta que se encuentra el hogar adecuado.
¿Cómo financiamos nuestras operaciones? Dependemos principalmente de donaciones únicas y recurrentes de amantes de los animales aquí y en el extranjero. Los voluntarios venden camisetas y suministros para mascotas todos los sábados en nuestro puesto en el Mercado Orgánico de San José. También contamos con el apoyo de Huellitas, una pequeña tienda de artículos de segunda mano en el edificio del refugio, atendida únicamente por voluntarios dedicados. El 100% de los ingresos tanto del mercado como de la tienda de segunda mano van a LCHS. Tratamos de organizar eventos de recaudación de fondos varias veces al año, pero debido a la pandemia, acabamos de organizar nuestro primer evento desde 2019 en diciembre de 2022, el torneo de golf Paws ‘n Claws en Palmilla.
Empleamos a 4 miembros del personal que cubren el cuidado de todos los animales los 7 días de la semana. Alentamos a los voluntarios a que vengan a pasear perros al refugio de lunes a sábado de 8 a 10 am y de 5 a 6 pm y los domingos de 9 a 10 am y socializar con los gatos de lunes a sábado de 8 am a 5 pm y los domingos de 9 am a 2 pm.

About Us
The Los Cabos Humane Society (“LCHS”) was founded September 17, 1992 and has been serving the Los Cabos community continuously for the last thirty years. The land on which our shelter was built was generously donated by the Ceseña family.
Our mission is to halt the serious problem of animal overpopulation in our communities. In Los Cabos, the fastest growing municipality in Mexico, there are thousands of abandoned, sick or homeless dogs and cats. There are no government agencies or resources allocated for animal control in Los Cabos.
From 2018 to 2022, LCHS performed 15,430 free or low-cost sterilizations. We focus on bringing this service to the most needy and underserved neighborhoods. This is where our programs are making the biggest difference.
In 2022 LCHS introduced the unique and extremely successful “Veterinarian in Your Colonia” campaign, bringing veterinarians out into the poorest neighborhoods of Los Cabos four days a week. During the campaigns, pet owners that for the most part, do not have transportation or enough income to bring their pets to private veterinarians, can come to the pop-up clinic in their neighborhood and have their pets examined for just 50 pesos, the equivalent of $2.50 USD. In addition to the exam, we offer at-cost vaccinations, de-worming, lab work and flea/tick treatments. The fee charged for sterilizations is much lower than our actual cost and includes anesthesia, antibiotics, and dissolving sutures so there is no need for the pet owner to miss more work to have the stitches removed. The prices for sterilizations at our clinics are between $2.50 USD and $25 USD: 150 pesos for male dogs, 50 pesos for male cats, 500 pesos for female dogs and 200 pesos for female cats.
Community education is very important in working to curb animal overpopulation. We regularly visit schools and host students at the shelter to teach them about the humane treatment and care of companion animals, and why spay and neuter is so vital. We also provide an opportunity for high school students to complete their required community service hours at the shelter.
In 2022 we placed 110 fortunate dogs and cats in forever homes, nearly double the number of adoptions in 2021. Most of the cats and dogs were adopted locally and some went to the US and Canada where we have rescue partnerships. We have a lot of large breed dogs at our shelter, including many pit bull mixes. They make up the majority of dogs running loose and procreating. They usually don’t get adopted quickly and are not easy to fly out of Mexico due to size. The shelter is home to many teenage and adult cats who also are more difficult to place than kittens.
Since 2018 LCHS has been a “no-kill” shelter, and sometimes dogs and cats live with us for a year or longer until the right home is found.
How do we finance our operations? We rely mostly on one-time and recurring donations from animal lovers here and abroad. Volunteers sell t-shirts and pet supplies each Saturday at our booth at the San José Organic Market. We also enjoy the support of a small thrift store in the shelter building, staffed solely by dedicated volunteers. 100% of the proceeds from both the market and the thrift store go to LCHS. We try to host fundraising events a few times a year but due to the pandemic, we just hosted our first event since 2019 in December 2022, the Paws ‘n Claws, golf tournament at Palmilla.
We employ four staff members who cover the care of all the animals 7 days a week. We encourage volunteers to come walk dogs at the shelter Monday to Saturday 8-10 am and 5-6 pm and Sundays from 9-10 am and socialize with the cats Monday to Saturday 8 am – 5 pm and Sundays from 9 am – 2 pm.
